German text  1. Im Weinberg auf der Höhe Ein Häuslein steht so windebang; Hat weder Tür noch Fenster, Die Weile wird ihm lang. 2. Und ist der Tag so schwüle, Sind all‘ verstummt die Vögelein, Summt an der Sonnenblume Ein Immlein ganz allein. 3. Mein Lieb hat einen Garten, Da steht ein hübsches Immenhaus; kommst du daher geflogen? Schickt sie dich nach mir aus? 4. „O nein, du feiner Knabe, Es hieß mich niemand Boten gehn; Dies Kind weiß nichts von Lieben, Hat dich noch kaum gesehn. 5. „Was wüßten auch die Mädchen, Wenn sie kaum aus der Schule sind! Dein herzallerliebstes Schätzchen Ist noch ein Mutterkind. 6. „Ich bring ihm Wachs und Honig; Ade! Ich hab ein ganzes Pfund; Wie wird das Schätzchen lachen! Ihm wässert schon der Mund.“ 7. Ach, wolltest du ihr sagen, Ich wüßte was viel süßer ist: Nichts Lieblichers auf Erden, Als wenn man herzt und küßt!

English translation 1. In a vineyard on a hilltop a house stands windswept, lone, and small with neither door nor windows; and time slows to a crawl. 2. The day so warm and humid that all the birds about are still. A bee buzzed ‘round a sunflow’r, intent to get his fill. 3. My true love has a garden and keeps a lovely hive for bees. Have you from there come flying? Did she send you to me? 4. “Oh no, my boy, most surely, I bear no messages for you; this child knows naught of loving, has hardly noticed you. 5. “What can they know, these school-girls, for hardly out of school they are! And your dear beloved sweetheart is still a mamma’s-girl. 6. “I bring her wax and honey. Fare-well, I have almost a pound; your sweetheart’s mouth will water, I hear her laughing now!” 7. Oh, would you then please tell her that I know what far sweeter is: on earth is naught more lovely than to embrace and kiss.
