Composer: Anonymous (Medieval Organum, c. 1000-1100)

Hello,

I came across this "composer" recently, because currently it sorts under "1" in the list of composers. So far, only one work page (Cunctipotens_genitor_Deus_(Anonymous_(Medieval_Organum,_c._1000-1100))), added earlier this year; on this page, Composer is listed as Anonymous. The word "Organum" occurs in six other pages.

I think Organum would be better as a category (and subgenre). Wikipedia says Organum is "a form of heterophony" – so it sounds like "Organum" is a legitimate name for a (sub)genre of music. Certainly the form of this composer's name doesn't quite fit the usual conventions. Also I suspect that there is a lot of this on CPDL in the various anonymous and chant categories already.

However, I am very far from knowing much about this genre of music; I just know "Anonymous (Medieval Organum)" doesn't look like a composer. What do you think?

(P.S. What is the plural of Organum?)

Medieval Organum

Dear Barry:

You are quite right - this title does not fit the convention, and you are gracious in pointing it out. Fixed.

I'll call it a newbie mistake, not having had enough experience to realize what I was doing.

"Organum" certainly is a suitable category in its own right and shouldn't be confused with the authorship of a melody.

Sorry it took me so long to notice this comment - I don't log in very often. I wish we got notices of messages . . . maybe we do and I haven't figured out that feature yet!

The plural of organum? I'll vote for "Organim!"
