Description: The earliest identified setting of these words appeared in the "Gentleman's Magazine" for November, 1748: "The words by Mr Oats, set to musick by Mr T. Wright, both of Devonshire". The carol appears from the extant settings to have been especially popular in the western counties of Somerset, Dorset and Devon. Hymn Tune Index tune number 1938.
