Charles Wood was born in Vicars’ Hill, Armagh, Ireland. He was a chorister in St. Patrick’s Cathedral and trained at the Cathedral Choir School. He studied organ under T. O. Marks in Armagh (1880-81), and was one of the inaugural class members of the Royal College of Music, studying with Charles Villiers Stanford and Charles Hubert Parry. He studied at Selwyn College, Cambridge, and started teaching there. He taught at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, then took a position as Professor of Music in the University of Cambridge.
