- Edition notes: Source - Piae Cantiones, where the refrain melody is in the Tenor (see Arcadelt, 'Vitam que faciunt beatiorem' and the Lutheran hymn 'Danket dem herren'). The alto second syllable of 'virginae' is a tone lower in the source (facsimile of the original Piae Cantiones). Convention appears to have amended this to a C in order to fit with the bass E naturals (I suspect it was ficta practice to flatten these as the second edition - Rostock 1625 - gives E flats). Piae Cantiones does not provide a melody for the verses; the one which has entered the repertory appears to be a variant of 'Universi Populi' found in Praetorius' Musae Syoniae - the first and last bar differ, perhaps altered by the folk group Steeleye Span to give an even tessitura, though it shifts the tonal centre subtly to C, or perhaps it is as Bob Johnson (Steelye Span guitarist) originally heard it with his father-in-law at a Cambridge church. In the spirit of this oral tradition the well-known version has been adapted for SAATTBB
