English text
1 Life's deceits, to failure tending,
Make our anxious wishes vain;
Blindly on success depending,
Disappointment we obtain:
Till experience, truth revealing,
These delusions makes us spurn,
Sweetly o'er our sense stealing,
Joy and peace again return!
2 In ourselves their source possessing,
Ever flowing with delight,
We, enjoyment's thirst repressing,
Still retain it pure and bright.
All in vain, with hate offending,
Thro' the world we seek for joy,
Pleasure's flow at once suspending,
Joy and peace we thus destroy.
3 Clear and peaceful retrospection
Life's best blessing can disclose,
From each storm it yields protection,
While contentment brings repose.
What though clouds our path surrounding,
O'er the future darkness cast,
Peace of mind in us abounding,
Lights the present and the past.
