German translation
Schaut die Mutter voller Schmerzen,
wie mit gramerfülltem Herzen
sie am Kreuz des Sohnes steht!
Wie im allertiefsten Leide
eines Schwertes scharfe Scheide
hin durch ihre Seele geht!
Ach wie traurig ihm zur Seite
stand die hochgebenedeite
Mutter Gottes weinend da!
Wie sie zitterte und bebte,
nun sie solchen Schmerz erlebte,
des Erhab'nen Marter sah!
Ach, wer sollte da nicht weinen,
mit der Mutter sich vereinen
in so tiefem Seelenschmerz!
Ach, wer sollte da nicht klagen,
sieht er trauern, sieht er zagen,
dort das treuste Mutterherz.
