You are all very welcome to use the following English version, which I wrote for Bircham Dyson Bell LLP's Carol Service at St Margaret's Church, Westminster Abbey on Thursday, 17 December 2015. Bircham Dyson Bell is a law firm but we put on a Carol Service at St Margaret's every year, with a choir made up almost entirely of employees. I chose this piece not just because it is lovely, but also to mark the 150th anniversary of Sibelius's birth on 8 December 1865. I have remained as faithful as possible to the text of the original poem, although was necessary to take one or two small liberties in order to preserve the rhyming pattern. I hope you enjoy it. | |||

Bircham Dyson Bell is a law firm but we put on a Carol Service at St Margaret's every year, with a choir made up almost entirely of employees. I need no fanfares, gold nor worth
This holy Christmastide:
God's glory give me, peace on earth,
An angel as my guide;
A humble feast, the table dressed
As best befits the King, my guest;
No fanfares give me, gold nor worth,
But give me peace on earth.
I yearn for home, my loved ones near,
All gathered round the tree;
Through winter's darkness, shining clear,
God's light for all to see.
For quiet conscience now, I pray;
For faith and hope to show the way;
For hearth and home, my loved ones near;
And God's light shining clear.
To one and all this time of year
Come blessed Christmas peace!
Come youthful spirits, hearts of cheer
And joys that never cease!
Almighty God, to you we sing,
Be with us now, immortal King!
May one and all this time of year
Have peace and Christmas cheer!
