Tirsi, sotto un alloro,
si dolea lagrimando in questi accenti:
«O celesti facelle,
di lei ch’amo ed adoro
rassomigliate voi gli occhi lucenti.
Luci care e serene,
sento gli affanni, ohimè, sento le pene;
luci serene e liete,
sento le fiamme lor mentre splendete.»

English translation

By light of the stars
Tirsi, under a laurel,
laments in this tone:
‘Oh, heavenly torches,
of whom I love and adore
you remind me the bright eyes.
Beloved and serene lights,
I feel my loss, alas, and my woe;
serene and joyful lights,
I feel your flames as you flicker.’
