Biography

Italian Baroque poet, dramatist, and literary critic from Genoa. Educated at the University of Padua under noted scholars, he became known for his erudition and joined elite literary societies such as the Accademia degli Addormentati and Accademia degli Incogniti.

He began his career with love poetry in the Petrarchan style, but later turned to religious and moral themes. His most famous work is the epic poem La reina Esther (1615), based on the biblical story of Esther. It brought him great acclaim and inspired frescoes in a Genoese palace.

Cebà had a notable epistolary relationship with the Jewish poet Sara Copia Sullam, whom he admired deeply and encouraged to convert to Christianity. Their intense exchange lasted from 1618 to 1622, though only Cebà’s letters survive.
