Biography
Arthur Cottam was born in Camberwell, Surrey, England. At age 15, after his father died, he entered the office of Woods, Forests and Land Revenues as a civil servant, remaining there his entire career. He had a wide range of interests and abilities including microscopy, entomology, botany, astronomy, and the arts. He was a leader in the formation of the Natural History Society and the British Astronomical Association. A skilled draftsman, he produced the well-received “Constellations from the North Pole to between 35 and 40 degrees of South Declination.” He was also an amateur musician and composer. He died in Bridgwater, Somerset. His published works include a Te Deum, piano pieces, songs, and part-songs.
