English text
Behold! the moon now gently rises,
Filling with splendour the realms on high;
She with the dark earth sympathises,
Yields it her glory from out the sky!
Where was but gloom her beams are glowing,
Welcome, O welcome, this gift of light;
Let it be with us till morn is showing,
Gracious and beautiful orb of night!
Shine on, O shine on,
Thy fair lustre bestowing,
Gracious and beautiful orb of the night!
Upon the sea where ships are sailing,
Over the mountains and vales between,
Darkness no longer lies prevailing,
Potent the sway of her silvery sheen!
Lit are the streams to the ocean flowing,
Set are the wanderer’s feet aright,
Manifold blessings to thee are owing,
Gracious and beautiful orb of night!
