Biography

German-American composer of music for the church. The full name of this composer is Bernard Henrich Franz Hellebusch. He was born in Germany, received his training as a teacher in the University of VechtaLink to the English Wikipedia article (then a Catholic teacher's college), emigrated to the United States in 1843. He lived and taught in both Cincinnati, Ohio and Covington, Kentucky. One of the sides of the monument at his grave in the cemetery in Kentucky where he is buried reads: "To those who are troublesome / Church composers / Your zeal in your teaching / We give thanks for pious songs / Harmonies of angelic choirs / May you sound forever!" (Google translation of gravestone, originally in German)

The source all works composed or arranged by Bernard Hellebusch is his Cantata Catholica published in 1876. In the foreword for the book Mr Hellebusch indicates: "Many of the compositions contained in this book, have been composed and harmonized by myself, and for many of them I am indebted to authors who are altogether unknown to me, and which I copied many years ago."
