French text C'est ung grand mal que d’ung refuz et si n'est, on jamais plaint dame. Je le sçay bien car quant je fuz Ung jour refusé de ma dame. De doeul me vint à l'oeil la larme, Et mon vis tout trist’et confuz. C'est ung grand mal que d’ung refuz. Modern French C'est un grand mal de refuser et si ce n'est, on ne plaît pas la dame. Je le sais bien, car je fus un jour refusé par ma dame. De deuil me vint la larme à l'oeil, et je fus triste et confus. C'est un grand mal que le refus.

English translation It is so wrong to be refused If ‘tisn’t, then women ne’er decry. I know it well from being bemused When once my wife did me deny. From grief a tear came to my eye, My face looked sad and all confused. It is so wrong to be refused. Translation by Thomas Daughton
