Im schönsten Garten wallten zwei Buhlen Hand in Hand,

zwei kranke bleiche Gestalten,

sie sassen in Blumenland.

Sie küssten sich auf die Wangen,

sie küssten sich auf den Mund,

sie hielten sich fest umschlungen,

und wurden jung und gesund,

sie hielten sich fest umschlungen,

Zwei Glöcklein klangen helle,

der Traum verschwand zur Stund',

sie lag in der Klosterzelle, er fern in des Turmes Grund.

English translation

There walked within a garden two lovers hand in hand,

two ashen delicate creatures, they sat in the flowers' land.

They kissed and their arms enfolded,

they kissed so, despite their pain, embracing,

and in their rapture becoming strong once again, embracing,

Two bells rang out, all dreaming to vanish at their sound,
