Description:  Note by Whittaker: Sandhill, which Sandgate adjoins, was the centre of life in the old days of Newcastle-on-Tyne, the scene of Royal proclamations and the ground of important civic events. The good wife has just returned from the source of town news, and is retailing items of gossip about regimental comings and goings to her friends, while keeping the infant quiet on her knee in the cradle.
