Donna crudel, se ’l viver mio v’annoia
E la pena e ‘l martire
Non mi fa morire
Volendo pur ch’io mora
Piacer datemi e gioia
Ch’è l’alma sempre nel amaro avezza
Morrà de la dolcezza.

German translation

Grausame, wenn mein Weiterleben euch verdrießt
und Schmerz und Leid
mich nicht töten,
wenn ihr doch wollt, dass ich sterbe,
dann gebt mir Vergnügen und Freude,
denn wenn die Seele immer nur Bitterkeit gewöhnt ist,
wird sie an der Wonne sterben.

Cruel Lady, if myliving any longer annoys you
and woe and grief
don’t kill me,
if you still want me to die,
then give me pleasure and joy,
for if the soul is only used to bitterness,
