Clavius combined four short sections from the Song of Songs, slightly adapting the last one, to create his text: 2, 1; 4, 15; 5, 1; 6, 1. Modern editions show slightly differing chapter and verse numbers for the last two sections: 4, 16.2; 6, 2.

Latin text Ego flos campi et lilium convallium. Fons hortorum et puteus aquarum viventium quae fluunt impetu de libano. Veniat dilectus meus in hortum suum et comedat fructum pomorum suorum descendat ad areolam aromatis, ut pascatur in hortis et lilia colligat.

German translation Ich bin eine Blume in Saron und eine Rose im Tal, ein Gartenbrunnen, ein Born lebendiger Wasser, die lebhaft vom Libanon fließen. Mein Freund komme in seinen Garten und esse von den Früchten seiner Bäume. er gehe hinab in seinen Garten zu den Gewürzbeeten, dass er weide in den Gärten und Rosen pflücke. English translation I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys, a garden fountain, a well of living waters that are streaming sprightly from Lebanon. My beloved shall come into his garden and eat of the fruit of his trees, he shall go down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to feed in the gardens, and to gather lilies.
