Biography
Francis Lodowick York was born in Ontonagon, Michigan, graduating from Ann Arbor High School and the University of Michigan. He travelled to Paris and studied organ and composition with Alexander Guilmant. Returning to the U.S., he taught piano, organ and composition at the University of Michigan; was head of the piano department at the Michigan State Normal Conservatory; and was director of the Detroit Conservatory of Music. He also was organist and director at Central Methodist Episcopal Church, Detroit. He appeared as a concert organist at the 1901 Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, and alternated with Alexander Guilmant in organ concerts at the 1904 St. Louis Exposition. He wrote textbooks on harmony and counterpoint and was active as a composer, an editor of music, and as a lecturer on musical subjects.
