General Information

Title: Gaude virgo
Composer: John Sheppard
Lyricist:

Number of voices: 6vv   Voicing: SATTBarB with divisions
Genre: SacredAntiphon

Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella

First published:

Description: Gaude virgo is the only large-scale votive antiphon by Sheppard to survive in more than a fragmentary state. Even this has not survived unscathed. All the necessary voice parts survive for the reduced-voice sections, but the full choir sections lack the Treble part. It is unfortunate that it is such a prominent voice part that is incomplete, but the quality of the work justifies an attempt at completion.

Gaude Virgo Christipara
quam adumbrans lux divina
selegit ex virginibus.

Sola ut esses singulari
quam contigit decorari
partu imbuta caelibus.

Ex te semen hoc divinum
cujus caput serpentinum
est contritum viribus.

Christum dico designatum
sed pro nobis incarnatum
ex tuis visceribus.

Ergo Sathan, mors, peccatum
hinc videtis procretum
ut vestra habens capita.

Laus sit Patri et majestas
tibi Christi rex potestas,
qui consopisti omnia.
Amen.
