I am dreaming of a cottage,
Half concealed beneath the shade,
Where the robins sweetly caroled,
And the idle zephyr played,
And I weep, as o’er me stealing
Comes an echo soft and low,
From a lute whose chords were broken
By the touch of long ago.

Still in pensive thought I linger,
By that rustic cottage door,
But the zephyr moans in pity,
And the robin sings no more.

I am dreaming, fondly dreaming
Of a blue-eyed maiden fair,
With her cheek of merry dimples
And a step as light as air;
But we laid her with the roses,
Where a brooklet murmurs low,
And my life’s young love is sleeping
In the grave of long ago.

Still in pensive thought I linger,
By that rustic cottage door,
But the zephyr moans in pity,
And the robin sings no more.
