French text  modernised Il était un jeune homme qui avait non jennet; qui n'avait bonne grâce sinon quand il filait sa quenouille auprès d'un moulinet. Si vous l'eussiez vu rire, eussiez dit qu'il pleurait.

English translation There was a young man who hadn't a groat; he wasn't good-humoured except when he was spinning his distaff onto a reel. If you had seen him laughing, you would have said he was crying. (trans Timmi O'Danaos & Donna Ferrentes)
