1 Lobt Gott, ihr Christen, allzugleich,
in seinem höchsten Thron,
der heut schließt auf sein Himmelreich
und schenkt uns seinen Sohn.
2 Er kommt aus seines Vaters Schoß
und wird ein Kindlein klein,
er liegt dort elend, nackt und bloß
in einem Krippelein.
3 Er äußert sich all seiner G'walt,
wird niedrig und gering
und nimmt an sich ein's Knechts Gestalt
der Schöpfer aller Ding.
4 Er wechselt mit uns wunderbar,
nimmt Fleisch an, wird uns gleich,
beut uns die klare Gottheit dar
in seines Vaters Reich.
5 Er wird ein Knecht und ich ein Herr;
das mag ein Wechsel sein!
wie könnt' es doch sein freundlicher,
das herz'ge Jesulein.
6 Heut schleußt er wieder auf die Tür
zum schönen Paradeis:
der Cherub steht nicht mehr dafür,
Gott sei Lob, Ehr und Preis!

 English translation
1 Praise God, ye Christians, all together
In his highest throne,
Who today unlocks his kingdom
And gives us His Son.
2 He comes from his father's lap
and becomes a small infant,
thus he lies miserable, naked and helpless
in a manger.
3 He exchanged all his power,
becoming poor and low
and assumes the shape of a servant,
the Creator of all things.
4 Now He as servant, I as lord,
in wond'rous interchange
in order to fulfill the word
His Father had ordained.
5 And He as servant, I as lord,
a wondrous shift indeed!
That tiny Jesus, babe adored,
is still a friend to me.
6 Today he again unlocks the door
to the beautiful paradise.
The cherub no longer bars the way.
To God be praise, honor and glory.
