Biography
Louis Arthur Russell was born in Newark, New Jersey, and studied voice with the English tenor William Shakespeare (1849–1931). He taught voice and was director of the Newark New Jersey College of Music, director of the Metropolitan Schools of Musical Art at Carnegie Hall, and conductor of the Schubert Vocal Society. He was known as a recitalist, conductor and author of numerous books on the art of singing including “The Commonplaces of Vocal Art; A Plain Statement of the Philosophy of Singing, in a Series of Informal Chats with Vocalists, Teachers, Students,” “English Diction for Singers and Speakers,” and “The embellishments of music: a study of the entire range of musical ornaments from the time of John Sebastian Bach.”
