Description: The second of four anonymous Magnificats in the Carver Choirbook. This 4-part Magnificat from the Carver Choirbook is stylistically very similar to the music in the Eton Choirbook. The SATB configuration is a bit unusual in British music of this period: most common is SATTB. Both sources share some compositions: Cornysh’s Salve Regina, Lambe’s Magnificat octavi toni and John Nesbett’s Magnificat (fragmentary in Eton). The index of the Eton Choirbook mentions four 4-part Magnificats now missing from that source with the same compass (22 notes, most likely F to f”) as the current Magnificat: one by Browne, two by Baldwin and one by Sygar. It is not impossible that one of those is actually our present Magnificat.
