MBEKI Dikela MBALI’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Mbeki Mbali popularly known as Dikela (his clan name) was born in a small Eastern Cape town called Aliwal North on the 12th June 1963 but bred at the Tentergate Village near Queenstown. He was named after his ancestor who was also a twin with a girl Bekiwe. Mbeki hails from a family of strong religious background (Anglican church) and his father Siphiwe Mbali was a sub deacon in the Anglican church. Did his primary and secondary education in and around Queenstown. Dikela is married to Noxhanti Pamela Mbali with whom he has two handsome boys Sambesiwe and Hlonela.

MUSICAL BACKGROUND

Since his tender ages, he would be told that his voice is beautiful. His musical career started in church and school choirs where he sang as a tenor soloist. Even as early as those years, he had yearned for good tonal quality(even though he was not sure how to achieve that). The irony is that Mbeki only got introduced to local/adult choirs in 1986 and joined the Serenade choir in East London under the baton of the late Mr Mthunzi Noganta(what a talented musician who surprisingly had no formal education in music). As for the gift to compose(intwaso),that was certainly inherited from my beloved mother(Nophakamile) who was a soprano soloist during her innings. Started composing in 1996 but did not think serious of it until it was precipitated by the death of my father in 1997. First composition was a strophic one and this was a written eulogy to my father. Has a Certificate in Choral Conducting, Grade 6 in singing (cum laude) and BMus Ed from the University of Port Elizabeth.
