Original text and translations

Italian.png Italian text

Non ti sdegnar o Filli ch'io ti segua,
perché la tua bellezza
in un momento fugge e si dilegua.
E se pria che ti giunga aspra vecchiezza
non cogli il frutto de la tua beltate
potrai forse pentirti in altra etate.

English.png English translation

Stop disdaining me as a suitor, Phyllis,
because your beauty
fades away in a moment, and disappears.
And if you do not reap the benefits of your beauty
before the harsh old age catches up with you,
you might regret it when you're older.

Translation by Campelli

Latin contrafactum Ne confide

Latin.png Latin text

Ne confide in forma generosa,
neque spem tuam pone
in volubilitate divitiarum.
Sperne prudens honores populares,
qui dilabuntur ut in Sole nives
nec satiare queunt sitim tuam.

English.png English translation

Do not rely on beauty
and place not your hope
in the unreliability of wealth.
Prudently reject honours and popularity,
which disappear like snow in the sun
and cannot quench your thirst.

Translation by Campelli
