Description: Because this motet was first published in a book of motets by Cristóbal de Morales, it was long assumed to have been composed by Morales. Research, however, has ascertained that Maistre Jhan is the composer.

Latin text Paulus apostolus spirans in discipulos Domini cum iter faceret et appropinquaret Damasco, subiter circumfulsit eum lux de caelo, et cadens in terra audivit vocem dicentem sibi: 'Saule, quid me persequeris?' Qui audita voce dixit: 'Quis es, Domine?' 'Ego sum Iesus Nazarenus, quem tu persequeris. Durum est tibi contra stimulum calcitrare.' 'Domine, quid vis me facere?' 'Surge, quia vas electionis factus es mihi, plenus spiritu sancto, ut portes nomen meum in universo mundo.'

English translation Paul the apostle [as he subsequently became; at this point in the narrative, Saul] was uttering threats against the Lord’s disciples. As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” Hearing that, he said: “Who are you, Lord?” “I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting. This is a thankless task of yours, kicking against the goad.” “Lord, what would you have me do?” “Arise, for you are my chosen instrument, full of the holy spirit, and proclaim my name to the whole world.”
