Biography
After being a choirboy and a decorated soldier of fortune, Maessens, along with Stephan Mahu, was vice-Hofkapellmeister to Arnold von Bruck, in Vienna. Maessens succeeded Bruck in 1546 as Hofkapellmeister, staying in the post until his death, when he was succeeded by Jean Guyot. His tenure was noted for his recruitment of musicians from the South Netherlands.
