When down the hills
The little rills
No more in glee are flowing,
And fiercely down,
With burning frown
The summer sun is glowing;
’Tis then with joy we greet the gales
That waft us clouds with snowy sails,
From distant regions blowing.

Fall softly o’er the thirsty earth,
O gentle summer rain!
’Till grain-clad hills and fertile vales,
In beauty smile again.

When every flower,
In field and bower
Is drooping low and dying;
When songs of birds,
No more are heard,
Each with the other vying,
’Tis then with joy we greet the gales
That waft us clouds with snowy sails,
O’er hill and valley flying.
