Life

Died: 1548/9

Biography

Okeland was a lay clerk at Eton College from August 1532 to January 1534. He then served as Master of the Choristers and organist at the church of St Mary-at-Hill, London, remaining there until August 1535. By June 1545 he was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, where he is last recorded in April 1547. Presumably he was still a member of the Chapel in July 1548 when, as a reward for his services to Henry VIII and Edward VII, he was offered the ruinous chapel commonly called ‘le Roode Chappell of Grenewyche’. He does not appear in any of the chapel lists from 30 April 1549 onwards, so he had probably died by then.
