There are songs in the heart that are never sung,
To the finest chords of the spirit strung,
Like the undercurrent of ocean stirred,
Whose low, deep symphonies sweep unheard;
There are songs of gladness when earth is bright,
With beauty of glowers and the glow of light;
With joy of friendship, the song of birds—
There are songs of gladness too deep for words.

There are songs of sorrow through all the years,
Whose only language is silent tears;
Where the wrong has triumphed, or hope is riven,
Like the dove o’er a shoreless ocean driven;
There are songs of rapture that thrill the soul,
When thoughts of God and of heaven’s control;
They wake in the spirit like visions bright,
There are sweet songs voiceless, but swift as light.

There are songs of triumph unheard, untold,
As the silent splendor of day unrolled,
Where it conquers night as the peaceful breath
Oft calms; the smile on the lips of death;
There are songs of peace and unspoken rest,
That come to the spirit to make it blest,
From heights of glory by seraphs trod,
On the wings of prayer from the hills of God.
