Merge discussion

With some settings of Tantum ergo now being listed on the Pange lingua page, I wonder whether the former (Tantum ergo) page might be merged with the latter (Pange lingua) and a redirect from Tantum ergo to Pange lingua created. -- Chucktalk Giffen 00:31, 11 January 2008 (PST)

Sounds like a good idea to me! --Bobnotts talk 01:30, 11 January 2008 (PST)

I don't think it's a good idea. There are different liturgical uses for the Pange Lingua and Tantum Ergo even though the Tantum Ergo is part of the Pange Lingua text. When I need a Tantum Ergo for benediction, I'm not going to look under Pange Lingua. Similarly, when I'm looking for a Pange Lingua setting for Corpus Christi or something, I'm not going to want to sift through the Tantum Ergo settings. Plus, the settings on the Tantum Ergo page don't contain the rest of the Pange Lingua text. Please leave this as a separate page.--Jenny D 03:11, 20 January 2008 (PST)

Thanks for the feedback, Jenny. It would be fairly simple to separate the settings of just the Tantum Ergo from the settings of the entire Pange Lingua. Also, a redirect (or multiple redirects if necessary) could point from Tantum Ergo to Pange Lingua which would allow users to find the entire text easily. The redirect page could be categorised under "Text pages" so that users looking in that category would be able to find the text easily even though it would be on a page with the entire text, not just 2 stanzas. Settings could be labelled as to their appropriate liturgical usage on the text page and individual score pages. For these reasons, I still support the merger unless anyone has any further reasons to the contrary. --Bobnotts talk 06:32, 20 January 2008 (PST)
I agree with Rob and Chuck. The fact that some composers use different parts of the text does not warrant multiple pages for settings which essentially belong to the same text. Besides, the practice for psalm settings is the same: even if a composer chooses to work with only a selection of verses, the text link still refers to the entire psalm, as I think it should. joachim 18:56, 21 January 2008 (PST)
I vote with Jenny, I think. But how would the merge work? Would there be a separate listing of Tantum ergo settings? Richard Mix 22:08, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
I agree with Richard and Jenny. I think many people will want to search specifically for settings of Tantum ergo, rather than the whole hymn. If that's the case, we need a separate page for their convenience. Provided there are the appropriate links between the two pages, I don't think that's a problem. Jamesgibb (talk) 12:53, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
I see no problem in keeping both pages separate for convenience of users, but it does not make sense to me to duplicate texts and translations; I have tried a compromise by maintaining the individual pages while consolidating the translations on this page. Is that OK for everyone? —Carlos (talk) 16:21, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
As far as I know, every setting of the Tantum ergo is, in fact, in Latin only. I would suggest keeping the Latin text and the listing of the Tantum ergo compositions on the Tantum ergo page, but the translations should probably be on the Pange Lingua page. – Chucktalk Giffen 17:31, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
Good idea, Chuck - done as suggested. —Carlos (talk) 04:02, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

Nobis datus

Nobis datus is a different case than Tantum ergo, for which a separate liturgical use exists. Of the works listed there, Victoria is an incomplete edition and only anon/Puebla and Stolzer are stand alone verse 2's, which is a mystery if one assumes Pange lingua has always been sung according to the 20th century books. Stolzer also set a pair, verses 2 & 3 by our counting.

I nevertheless think a merge would be better. Richard Mix (talk) 22:58, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

I don't understand. Merge which pages (of the three or more mentioned above)? Reading the above comments, though, at least some editors see value (liturgical and practical) in keeping these separate. And of course, there are implications beyond this. There are many Psalms, for example, that have some paraphrases on the Psalm page, and others separate. This doesn't bother me too much, because most Psalm pages are pretty crowded (see Talk:Psalm 1). This speaks to me of proper categorization and linking, not necessarily merger or re-derangement. — Barry Johnston (talk) 16:12, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
