General information

The various texts are based on Matthew 16:18-19.

The Alleluia verse and the Communion antiphon for the Mass of SS Peter & Paul (June 29) both use the first line (through "…ecclesiam meam", and are also used at the Mass of S. Peter's Chains (August 1).

There are also an Offertory ("…regni caelorum") and a Tract ("…et in caelis") for the Common of Pontiffs or St. Peter's Chair at Rome (January 18 - tract.2, offert.1) or St. Peter's Chair at Antioch (February 22 - tract.2, offert.1).

Latin.png Latin text

Tu es Petrus
et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam
et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam.
Et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum.

Quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in caelis,
et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in caelis.
Et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum.

You are Peter,
And upon this Rock I will build My Church:
and the gates of hell shall not overcome it.

and I will give you the keys to the kingdom of Heaven.
