French text  modernized Un mari sa femme battant, Elle sébahit de ce fait, Et disant qu'elle n'a rien fait, Demande pourquoi la bat tant. "Je te bats aussi pour autant Que je sais (dit-il), "et vois bien, Que tous les jours tu ne fais rien, De quoi je ne suis content.

English translation So hubby's giving the wife a slap, And she's gobsmacked by this And, saying she's done nothing, Asks why he's beating her so hard.
