Voicing info on title

Hi John! I noticed you've been creating a few pages with "a 8", "a 10" etc. on the title. Do you think it's necessary? I usually only put voicing info on titles when it is necessary to distinguish two works by the same composer that have different number of voices; in all other situations I prefer the shorter, simpler title without it. But I guess there's no rule here at CPDL about it, it's a matter of taste. -- CarlosTalk 11:46, 29 June 2008 (PDT)

Hi Carlos, I'm actually not a proponent of the "a n", disignations, but merely following what Sabane had used as a title. I've omitted "a 4" because it's really not needed on a SATB work. If you do want to rename, just rename the display name, not the source name, so reloads will work. ie: Ave Maria Johnhenryfowler 12:48, 29 June 2008 (PDT)

Now I saw that Sabine used the "a n" designations inside the PDFs too, so perhaps we should leave the titles the way she conceived them. By the way, do you want me to create a composer page for "Faux des Spickable"? (just kidding! where did you take this crazy name from? :) -- CarlosTalk 13:16, 29 June 2008 (PDT)

Montecassino Ms-Adoramus te Domine PDF & MIDI files

Hi John. You never got back to me about what files I was supposed to make PDFs and MIDs for, but after much searching, I finally found Montecassino Ms-Adoramus te Domine.mus which says it is a Finale 2007 file, so I've made the following files:

File:Montecassino Ms-Adoramus te Domine.MID

File:Montecassino Ms-Adoramus te Domine.pdf

I hope these were the ones you wanted. -- Chucktalk Giffen 10:20, 3 July 2008 (PDT)

Adding editions which aren't available (yet)

Hi John. Great to see all these links to Art Song Central popping up. Unfortunately, on looking at one of the works page on ASC, I found that the work you indexed into CPDL isn't actually available there, though apparently it will be coming in the future. I have commented out all the edition info for ASC on the following pages:

I don't think it's a good idea to add links to sites for a resource that isn't there yet, even if it will be added soon. A user who comes to the CPDL works page from the "Most recent scores" list expecting to find a score or link to one would be disappointed. I suggest that you don't add score entries for works that aren't available. --Bobnotts talk 08:49, 13 July 2008 (PDT)

For what it's worth, the lack of links on ASC's Come raggio di sol was due to a faulty edit I made last night to remove a dead link. I have now replaced the information. The others in your list link to external sites. Two to Project Gutenberg, and two, if I recall correctly offhand to WIMA. Rather than remove those valuable resources from CPDL's links, it would be reasonable to link directly to those sites. I don't ever make song posts for material that is not immediately accessible. In any case, I thank both of you for your good work here. (And Bob, I hope I haven't caused hard feelings by my reaction to your post on IMSLP.) --David Newman talk 12:52am, 14 July 2008 (EST)
For what it's worth all the posting worked when I posted them, and they all pointed to pages at ASC. Welcome to cyberspace? Johnhenryfowler 10:52, 16 July 2008 (PDT)
John, I wasn't disputing the fact that all of the links you added pointed to ASC pages which exist, just that there wasn't a score scanned by David Newman available on those pages. There were indeed ASC pages for the score pages that I listed above, but they simply pointed to other resources available elsewhere on the web (and still do). PS. Your talk page is getting quite long. Perhaps you'd like to archive it - or I'd be happy to do it for you. --Bobnotts talk 07:00, 19 July 2008 (PDT)
Now that I understand your objection, I agree with you. Where the PDF file is not ASC's generated file, but rather a pointer to a different source, I will use the original source, and put the ASC pointer in the external links area of the works page. BTW: Feel free to archive my talk page the way you or Chuck did. It will make it more managable. Johnhenryfowler 11:57, 19 July 2008 (PDT)

Stanford you gave me to add

Hi John. I finally got round to adding Andrew Crookall's edition of Stanford's communion service in B flat and I've just been looking at his edition of the Kyrie and Sanctus of the setting in C. However, I've been listening to a recording and the two don't match. Can you shed any light on the situation? Where did the Sibelius files come from? Hopefully, I'll be able to get my hands on published editions of all of Stanford's communion services so I can sort this out. --Bobnotts talk 18:50, 21 July 2008 (PDT)

Hi Bob, http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/images/4/4b/Stanford-Masses-From-Crookall.zip <-- I've uploaded the original zip file that was on Crookall's site before it dissappeared. This is where the Sibelius files came from. Inside the zip there are duplicate names "Kyrie in C" and "Sanctus in C" a pair from 4/7/04 and the other 1/1/2004 and 12/30/2003 respectively. There thay be confusion between the communion service and the canticles. I believe that "Stanford in C" could stand for either. Good luck on the forensics ! Johnhenryfowler 23:46, 21 July 2008 (PDT)

Deep linking

Hi John. All the new editions that you're indexing into CPDL is really improving the choice and variety of works available here, it's great to come to CPDL and see all the new links.

A few points:

  1. Deep linking to resources, such as the link you added to the PDF of Après un rêve, Op. 7, No. 1 (Gabriel Fauré) from the Mutopia Project is considered bad netiquette (net etiquette) because it uses another site's bandwidth without actually linking to one of their web pages and giving them visitors. Where the link is to a PDF/MIDI/etc on the Williams College or CPDL servers, of course it is fine to have a direct link. Even if you have permission to deep link to the Mutopia Project in this fashion, it's not useful for users who miss out on the other resources available on the MP score page including PDFs in alternative paper sizes, MIDI and source files.
 >>I agree. I must have mistakenly pasted the wrong link... mistakes do happen...
  1. Secondly, please include the name of the editor of the edition in question, not "Mutopia" or "Mutopia Project". You can find the name of the editor in the bottom left hand corner of the Mutopia score page.
 >> Would that be the "Maintainer" ? What about the New York Public Library - they have the "scanner operator", and what about the "Internet Archive", they have the "Scribe Operator"
  1. Finally, if you're going to include the details of scores hosted externally, please make sure that they're correct. In the case of Après un rêve, Op. 7, No. 1 (Gabriel Fauré), the A4 PDF is 73 kbytes, not 200 as you suggested. There are many other cases where I have corrected the PDF file size for score entries that you added - that was just one example.
 >>If it says 200 it means I haven't edited it yet. When the files are remote it is a bother

to get the PDF size and the number of pages. I plan to go back and correct this information, but you are welcome to assist me. In the case of score page count this will not be the same as "Image Count" which includes all the blank pages, so the PDF scan would have to be opened, and the pages counted... You can see my edit to Après un rêve, Op. 7, No. 1 (Gabriel Fauré) here as an example. Thanks for your support in this - it'll save me a lot of time when I'm reviewing score pages! --Bobnotts talk 04:30, 22 July 2008 (PDT)

 >>Response is inbedded above ... Johnhenryfowler 06:14, 22 July 2008 (PDT)
Thanks for the quick reply. As for the individual that we call "editor" or "contributor" here on CPDL, it seems that Mutopia call them "Maintainers" though it seems clear to me (if you look at the text on the PDF) that the "Maintainer" is the typesetter and editor, so their name should be included where we have "editor". If there's no obvious contributor, then I guess it's ok to put an institution name, such as the Internet Archive. However, where you've identified a scanner or "scribe operator", they should indeed be listed (their name, not an email address).
I understand your relunctance to add the score info for externally hosted files, especially when that can so easily change with a revision, etc. When I'm tidying pages up, I don't usually include the PDF file size, so feel free to miss it out if you like. What we want to avoid is incorrect file sizes which may confuse the user.
As for the rest of the matters, I'm glad we're singing from the same hymn sheet! I've just reverted your addition to Requiem in D minor, Op. 48 (Gabriel Fauré), by the way, because it appears to duplicate the already submitted edition CPDL #12247. Feel free to revert my revert if I've missed something, and reply here. --Bobnotts talk 07:56, 22 July 2008 (PDT)

PDFs of Neue Liebeslieder all have misspelled titles

Hi John. Someone has pointed out that all the PDFs of your editions of the Brahms Neue Liebeslieder have misspelled titles. I checked, and indeed you have misspelled Liebeslieder as Liebesleider on all of them. You might want to change your Sibelius files and make new PDFs. -- Chucktalk Giffen 07:22, 30 August 2008 (PDT)

Thanks Chuck for pointing this out. (I think I knew about the mistake a while ago, but didn't have the

time to tackle this project. Due to inconsitancies in the names of the PDF, Midi and source files this took about 4 hours to accomplish ! (45 links on each of 2 pages, plus another set on the "Works" pages) - Let me know if any of the 45 links are broken. I checked the 15 PDF file links. Johnhenryfowler 06:49, 5 September 2008 (PDT)

I Loved Unloved

Hi John! On 2008-06-29 you uploaded 3 files and created an entry at Anonymous for a secular work from the Court of Henry the VIII, "I Loved Unloved". You were doing so many additions that you probably forgot to create the page for this one, this is just a reminder, ok? Regards, —Carlos Email.gif 16:08, 3 September 2008 (PDT)

Copyrighted translation

Hi John. Just to let you know that I removed a translation that you added to Jerusalem (Charles Hubert Hastings Parry). It was marked as being "copyright © 2003 by Amitha Iriarte". As you know, all content added to CPDL must be licensed under the CPDL license and this seemed not to be the case in this instance. If the translator was contacted and agreed to release their work under the CPDL license, I would be delighted to see the translation reappear. --Bobnotts talk 20:13, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

This translation is from "The Lied and Art Song Page", http://www.recmusic.org/lieder/ and I have permission from the author to use the (Spanish) translation. Whenever I use translations from this site I give credit to the author, but if you prefer we can just have a pointer to "The Lied and Art Song Page" so no credit would need to be recorded at CPDL.

Ireland : Te Deum in F

Hi John. I've made a PDF with a list of differences between my copy of Ireland Te Deum in F and your edition. There are quite a few, and though many may be editorial choices, there are definitely some errors you might like to fix! How can I get this to you? - Dansoper 11:35, 24 October 2008 (GMT)

Yes, I've given you my emai address on your Talk page. Johnhenryfowler 16:38, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks to Dan Soper for his edits to the Ireland Te Deum. I've incorporated all of them in the new edition. Johnhenryfowler 02:51, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

What is Finale 6?

Hi John. In a recent batch of editions that you submitted, you refer to the source file as "Finale 6". Do you mean "Finale 2006"? --Bobnotts talk 11:08, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes - Finale 2006 Johnhenryfowler 15:53, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

If ye love me (Thomas Tallis) CPDL #10651

Hi John - thanks for this, singing it today. I think the words for the bass part in bars 20/21 may need adjusting to conform to 33/34. Hope that's a help Drking 07:38, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi again - meant to say, we also found that bar 7 alto should be 'will', not 'shall', and that the tenor underlay is out in bars 16-18. Many thanks. Drking 09:10, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Elgar: Spirit of the Lord

John,

Many thanks for this edition, currently being rehearsed by the choir of St Mary's Priory, Abergavenny for use as an anthem for morning Mass sometime soon. Can you check a note for us? - first Bass note of bar 30 - wondered if it should be a G (or Eb). The F is not impossible in Elgarian harmony, as it "resolves" to the G at the end of the bar (after the other parts have moved on somewhere entirely different, but that could well be Elgar). Thanks,
--DaveF 19:50, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Dave. I'm sure that John won't mind me answering for him. Having just consulted a Novello copy of this, I can confirm that the bass note in bar 30 should be a G and it should also be a minim like the rest of the parts. --Bobnotts talk 15:45, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

My soul, there is a country (Charles Hubert Hastings Parry)

Ref: CPDL #2550 (parr-mys.mid)

I suggest that bar 62 of the second Bass part (and of the accompaniment) should have D as the second note rather than C.

User merge?

Hi John. I noticed that long ago you used to login with User:John Henry Fowler. Would you like to have that account united with the one currently in use (User:Johnhenryfowler)? The advantage is that all contributions you've ever made would be listed under a single user account instead of divided bewteen the two of them. Please take it as just a suggestion, you may continue with the two accounts if you prefer. Regards, —Carlos Email.gif 18:32, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

How are you doing?

Hi John, we noted that you have not been active at CPDL for some months. I was wondering whether there was any problem. I'm happy to see that you are fully operational again. I hope you were just too busy with other stuff. How are you? Max a.k.a. Choralia 20:40, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

John. In bar 6, you could precede the alto D with an advisory flat sign as you have done in bar 52 and as was done in the original Year Book Press edition.Vox humana 13:17, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Complete Edition of Neue Liebeslieder??

Hi, John! Is there any chance that, sometime in the future, your editions of the Neue Liebeslieder could be combined into a single complete pdf edition similar to that which exists for the Op. 52 set? That would be absolutely wonderful! --Hansenkd 18:59, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi John, how are you doing? I've just completed the preparation of choir training aids for some items of this work, and I identified some differences with respect to an edition available at IMSLP. Details are provided in the relevant discussion pages. Max a.k.a.Choralia 21:02, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Duplicated scores

Hi John. On 2010-12-23 I have submitted five scores, and after that I understood the way to add the scores myself. I posted three scores again in order to have the code, cause I didn't save the code for every score, and I will add the other two scores in a few days (when I add the composers). So there are three scores duplicated. If you look at the submitted scores database, you can see 8 posts by "solovoces"; you can delete the first 5 scores. Tantum ergo (Parisian) (Anonymous)

Hi,

I've been peeking at anon. works, and your pdf of Tantum ergo (Parisian) (Anonymous) seems to give publ.: Paris 1881 and tune: GRAFTON. The melody was a familiar one, and I checked the Catholic Community Hymnal, which attributes it to the composer of ADESTE FIDELES! If you should have time to look into it as well I'd love to learn more; perhaps when I get to the organ edition I can compare harmonizations. Richard Mix 00:16, 14 June 2011 (CDT)
