Italian text Vorrei l’orecchia aver qui chiusa e sorda Per udir coi pensier più fermi e intenti L’alte angeliche voci e i dolci accenti Che certa pace in vero amor concorda. Spira un aer vital fra corda e corda Divino e puro in quei vivi instrumenti, E si move ad un fine i lor concenti Che l’eterna armonia mai non discorda. Amor alza le voci, amor le abassa, Ordina e batte egual l’ampia misura Che non mai fuor del segno invan percote; Sempre è più dolce il suon, se ben ei passa Per le mutanze in più diverse note, ché chi compone il canto ivi n’ha cura.

English translation I wish my ear here were closed and deaf, to hear, with more firm and intent thoughts, the lofty angelic words and the sweet sounds that real peace is in harmony with true love. A vital breath, divine and pure, passes between the chords of those living instruments, and their consonance moves towards one purpose o that eternal harmony is never dissonant. Love raises the voices, love lowers them, Commands and beats the ample measure That never breaks the mould in vain; The sound is always sweeter, if it passes well Through the changes of various notes, Because the song’s Composer takes care of it.
