Biography
William Fiske Sherwin was born in Buckland, Massachusetts. Although he had little schooling as a child, at age 15 he went to Boston and studied music under Lowell Mason. He became a teacher of vocal music, and held appointments at the New England Conservatory of Music; in Hudson and Albany, New York; and in New York City. An American Baptist, he was the first music director at the Chautauqua Movement near Chautauqua, New York. He composed carols and hymn-tunes for use in in Sunday Schools, and helped prepare popular Sunday School hymn and tune books. He also was musical editor at Biglow & Main publishers. He died in Boston, Massachusetts.
