1  A font evokes the womb of God,
a place the soul takes form
in rhythm with the pulsing heart,
kept safe and fed and warm.

2  But soon enough the water breaks
and sleeping souls, uncurled,
are pushed with unrelenting will
into a waiting world.

3  Unlike the warm, sustaining womb,
this hard demanding earth --
is a terrifying gift,
the miracle of birth.

4  But baptized, born of God we are;
the new imprint is deep,
and children who awake to God
will not return to sleep ...

5  But seek to grow as all things grow
and trust what grace assumes --
that time will manifest the Life
received within the womb.
