O Teseo, o Teseo mio, | |||
sì, che mio ti vo dir che mio pur sei
benche t'involi, hai crudo! a gl'occhi miei.
Volgiti, Teseo mio, volgiti, Teseo, o Dio,
volgiti in dietro a rimirar colei
che lasciato per te la patria e'l regno
e'n quest' arene ancora
cibo di fere dispietate e crude,
lasciera l'ossa ignude.
O Teseo, o Teseo mio, | |||
se tu sapessi, oh Dio! | |||
se tu sapessi, ohime! | |||
come s'affanna | |||
la povera Ariana, | |||
forse, forse pentito | |||
rivolgeresti ancor la prora lito.
Ma con l'aure serene | |||
tu te ne vai felice | |||
ed io qui piango: | |||
A te prepara Attene | |||
liete pompe superbe, | |||
ed io rimango | |||
cibo di fere in solitarie arene.
Tu l'un el'altro tuo vecchio parente
Stringerai lieto ed io | |||
più non vedrovi o madre o padre mio.}}

Oh Theseus, oh mein Theseus,
denn mein will ich dich nennen, daß du noch mein bist,
wenn du dich auch, oh Grausamer, meinen Augen entziehst.
Wende dich, mein Theseus, - oh Gott!-
wenn du wüßtest, -oh Weh! -
wie die arme | |||
Ariadne leidet, | |||
vielleicht wendetest du reumütig
den Bug zum Ufer zurück.
Doch unter heiteren Lüften
fährst du fröhlich dahin
und ich weine hier; | |||
dir bereitet Athen | |||
frohe, großartige Triumphe
und ich bleibe zurück, | |||
Fraß der Tiere am einsamen Strande.
Du wirst die beiden alten Eltern
glücklich umarmen, | |||
ich aber sehe weder Mutter noch Vater je wieder.}}

Description: Il Lamento d'Arianna is composed of madrigal arrangements from the opera Arianna (lost). The lament was saved from oblivion by Monteverdi's decision to publish it independently from the opera: first in 1614 (SV 107) as a five-voice madrigal, then in 1623 (SV 22) as a monody and finally, in 1640, as a sacred hymn. The five-voice adaptation was included in the composer's Sixth Book of Madrigals. In 1868 the lament was published in Paris, and in 1910 the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi issued an edited, orchestral transcription.
