General Information
Title: Salve Regina
Composer: Louie Madrid Calleja
Number of voices: 1v Voicing: Soprano solo
Genre: Sacred, Motet
Language: Latin
Instruments: Wind ensemble
Published: Unpublished
Description: Written for a colleague and friend during my student days at York University, my intention was to create a sacred work that also functions as a suitable concert aria. It is an obvious fact that the challenges concerning the combination of wind symphony and soprano are vast and the original 1995 score contained certain impracticalities that I have rectified in the current version.
The original 1995 version was premiered in the same year at the Scarborough Civic Centre by Measha Bruggergosman (née Gosman) and the Northdale Concert Band under the direction of Stephen Chenette.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae
Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Haevae
Ad te spiramus gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia, ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos
Misericordes oculos ad nos converte.
Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,
Nobis pos hoc exsilium ostende.
O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.
Amen.
Hail, Holy Queen, mother of mercy
Our life, our sweetness, and our hope, hail.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs mourning and weeping
in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
Thine eyes of mercy towards us.
And after this our exile show unto us
The blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Amen.
