Citation: Millar, Edward, Editor. 1635. The Psalmes of David In Prose and Meeter, With Their Whole Tunes in Foure or Two Parts. Edinburgh, Scotland: Heirs of Andrew Hart. 229 pp.

Description: The melody line of tunes in this publication is by anonymous composers, often by exiles in Geneva in 1556 and following, or from the French, English, or German Psalters. The music was harmonized for the 1635 edition, but it is not certain which person harmonized which tune. Persons listed include:

Livingston (1864) has a complete analysis of sources and forms of words and music in his introductory dissertations."The absolute value or duration of these notes cannot be defined with certainty, but there are various considerations which impart much probability to the opinion that the minim [quarter note] corresponded very nearly to the crotchet [eighth note] of the present day, the other notes being in proportion."
