Description: A note from Robert Nottingham:
- Some of the editions on this page are scored for SATB, and some for Soprano solo and SATB where the sopranos take the 1st alto part and the altos take the second alto part. I have sung The Blue Bird in both ways but I personally prefer the latter scoring. Any enlightenment as to how Stanford intended the work to be performed would be welcomed on the discussion page.

English text
- The lake lay blue below the hill.
- O'er it, as I looked, there flew
- Across the waters, cold and still,
- A bird whose wings were palest blue.
- The sky above was blue at last,
- The sky beneath me blue in blue.
- A moment, ere the bird had passed,
- It caught his image as he flew.
Mary E. Coleridge
