The tune first appeared in Boyd's The Virginia Sacred Musical Repository (1818), then in Supplement to the Kentucky Harmony (1820); and in Southern Harmony, p. 67 (1835 ff.) for three voices. The Sacred Harp, p. 147 (1844-1911) has a version in three parts in 1844; Monday's four-part version was restored in The Sacred Harp in 1911. The Hesperian Harp, p. 444 (1848) has Monday's four-part version. Words by Joseph Hart, 1759, two stanzas; both stanzas were used in Monday's composition.
