Flexible voice assignment may apply for certain compositions where strict S, A, T or B is not mandated or indicated.

For example, a song or aria for solo voice where the voice part is simply written in the treble clef and may be sung by a soprano, or a tenor sounding at the octave below.

Or a choral work, such as a two part setting with an upper and a lower voice part, where the women may sing the upper part and the men the lower part.
