Italian text 1  Chi mi dimandarà che cosa è amore Io gli risponderò piangendo forte Che amor è vita, ch’ha color di morte. 2  Un dolce inganno un dilettoso errore Un vago pianto un dispiacevol riso E veder nel inferno il Paradiso. 3  E libera prigion senza timore Una falsa speranza un voler certo Servir al vento e non ricever merto. 4  Dunque fugite amanti il Dio d'amore Che chi serve un ingrato empio Signore Vi perte il tempo le fatiche l'hore.

Translation by Gerhard Weydt 2  Eine süße Täuschung, ein angenehmer Irrtum, ein unklarer Schmerz, ein unerfreuliches Lachen, und im Inferno das Paradies sehen. 3  Und freiwillige Knechtschaft, ohne Furcht, eine falsche Hoffnung, ein sicherer Wunsch, dem Wind zu dienen und keinen Verdienst zu empfangen. 4  Darum flieht, ihr Liebenden, den Liebesgott, denn wenn ihr einem undankbaren, boshaften Gott dient, vergeudet ihr die Zeit, die Mühe und die Stunden.

English translation Translation by Gerhard Weydt 1  If asked what love is, I will answer, lamenting aloud, that love is life that has the colour of death. 2  A sweet deception an agreeable error, a vague pain, an unpleasant smile, and seeing the paradise in hell. 3  And a voluntary prison, without fear, a false hope, a certain wish to serve the wind and to get no merit.. 4  Hence, oh lovers, flee the god of love, because if you serve an ungrateful and wicked lord, you lose your time, the toil and the hours.
