German text Ein neu Gebot gebe ich euch: daß ihr euch untereinander liebet, wie ich euch geliebet habe. Die Liebe ist langmütig und ist freundlich. Die Liebe eifert nicht, treibt nicht Mutwillen, sie stellet sich nicht ungebärdig. Sie suchet nicht das Ihre. Sie verträgt alles. Sie glaubet alles. Sie hoffet alles, sie duldet alles. Die Liebe höret nimmer auf.

English translation A new commandment I give to you: that you love one another even as I have loved you, for love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous, love is not boastful, for love is not arrogant or rude, does not insist on its own way. Love bears all things, believes all things and hopes all things, endureth all things. And love shall never end.
