The work was written in his birthplace in the spring and fall of 1819. It is well known in Italy. Italian text L'Infinito Sempre caro mi fu quest’ermo colle, e questa siepe, che da tanta parte dell’ultimo orizzonte il guardo esclude. Ma sedendo e mirando, interminati spazi di là da quella, e sovrumani silenzi, e profondissima quiete io nel pensier mi fingo; ove per poco il cor non si spaura. E come il vento odo stormir tra queste piante, io quello infinito silenzio a questa voce vo comparando: e mi sovvien l’eterno, e le morte stagioni, e la presente e viva, e il suon di lei. Così tra questa immensità s’annega il pensier mio: e il naufragar m’è dolce in questo mare.

Dutch text De Oneindigheid Steeds was mij deze eenzame heuvel lief en deze heg, die aan zoveel zijden de verre horizon aan ’t oog onttrekt. Telkens als ik hier zit, stel ik me erachter onmetelijke ruimten voor, en stilten die ’t menselijk begrip te boven gaan, en peilloos diepe rust; waarbij ik soms bijna verstijf van angst. En als ik dan de wind door deze takken heen hoor waaien, dan vergelijk ik die immense stilte met dit geruis: ik denk aan de eeuwigheid, aan de afgestorven jaren, en aan dit dat leeft, en aan ’t geluid ervan. En zo verdrinkt mijn geest in eindeloze diepten, en zoet is ’t mij in deze zee te zinken. Translation: Frans van Dooren
