General Information
Title: Mentr'io veggio apparir
Composer: Hippolito Sabino
Lyricist:
Number of voices: 7vv Voicing: SSATTTB
Genre: Secular, Madrigal
Language: Italian
Instruments: A cappella
First published: 1582 Il terzo libro de madrigali a 5 e a 6 voci (Venice: Angelo Gardano), no. 5
2nd published: 1590 in Dialoghi musicali (Angelo Gardano), no. 16
Description: The dedication is to Francesco I de' Medici (1541-1587) and the subject is his mistress and later wife, the famous Bianca Cappello
(1548-1587). Sabino's terzo libro is dedicated to Francesco, and no less than 4 pieces of the collection are expressly dedicated to him as
well. Perhaps since I dialoghi was published after their deaths, the text was updated to no longer be so topical.

Italian text
Mentre veggio apparir la lucida Alba,
coronata di stelle innanzi al Sole,
là dove albergar suole
lieto riguardo il cielo,
avendo allor deposto il fosco velo,
par che dica costei, ch'illustra e imbianca
il cieco mondo: è veramente BIANCA!
