Italian text Nei campi e nelle selve seguivo già le belve, pascevo il gregge ancor libero pastorello, libero cacciator, Ora non son più quello : perdei la libertà. E quel ch'è peggio, oh Dei ! French translation Par les champs et les forêts, berger et chasseur encore libre, je poursuivais autrefois les bêtes féroces et faisais paître le troupeau. À présent, je ne suis plus le même : j'ai perdu la liberté, ce qui est pire, oh Dieu ! Comme si elle n'était pas responsable de mon tourment, Clori n'a cure de mes plaintes.
